Too Much, Too Soon
- Ask Forest of Dean District Council to Reject the Application for 375 New Homes In Newent
We are in a housing crisis. House building has slowed or stopped for decades all over the country we are told.
Not in Newent! In recent years we have had development after development of new homes – most of them out of reach financially for our young people looking to get on the housing ladder. We have exceeded our new homes target in the Forest of Dean Local Plan.
Our infrastructure is creaking and we are full to bursting point. But now there is an application for the biggest development we’ve seen yet. 375 new homes bringing nearly 1,000 new people to Newent.
We believe this is too much, too soon, and are asking the planning authority, the Forest of Dean District Council, to say no to this application, when it comes before them in June.
If you too think these 375 new homes and 1,000 new residents are too much, too soon for Newent, please sign the petition to ask the Forest of Dean District Council to say NO.
Saying NO now will give us time to:
- finalise our neighbourhood development plan
- find ways to improve our infrastructure to catch up with the demands of our newly expanded population,
- Protect our wildlife and green spaces.
- Develop new employment opportunities that expand the range of jobs available in Newent, rather than just offering more of the same.
- Regenerate and build on our town centre facilities, rather than undermining them with the creation of a second town centre,
- Find ways to strengthen our community and bring it together, rather than creating divisions by sending children from the new development to a new primary school, separate from the rest of the town.
- Deliver development done for us not to us, which preserves our past, provides for our present and plans for our future.
